Just Another Day at the Office Personal computer (pc) repair technicians and doctors have a lot in common. Patients arrive at the doctor’s door bearing all manner of complaints or problems. I am sure doctors have seen and heard about every type of ignorant stunt a person can think of or do. My name is Skeeter Jones, and I have been a pc repair technician for approximately fifteen years. Like a doctor, I thought I had seen and heard of every crazy stunt imaginable until I received a call from Headaches, Incorporated about a computer crash. When I arrived at the job site, Lola and Chase, the office and terminal managers, greeted me. â€Å"Boy! Are we ever glad to see you,† they both cried in unison, â€Å"We have completely screwed up the computer.† â€Å"Well, show me the computer that is down while you tell me what happened,† I replied. â€Å"Linda, Lola’s co-worker, told us upgrading our computer system from Windows 95 to 98 would be easy for us to do ourselves. All we had to do was purchase the Windows 98 upgrade compact disc (CD),† Chase said. â€Å"Except, we could not find the CD.† Lola chimed in, â€Å"We picked out this CD instead. The salesman at Office Depot said, ’It would work just as well to upgrade our system.’† I looked down at the box she was holding in her hands. The words â€Å"Windows 2000 Upgrade† stared back at me in big, white letters. I just stood there for a minute shaking my head, and I silently groaned to myself. â€Å"Oh God! How could anybody be that stupid,† I thought. With an audible sigh, I said aloud, â€Å"Let me run a few diagnostic tests. I will be able to tell you how much damage has occurred in a couple of minutes.† I started with the basic stuff like making sure the computer would boot up. Then, I progressed layer by layer to the heart of the system. The tests took me nearly three hours to complete. As I dug deeper and deeper into the computer, I was utterly amazed at how much damage they had wreaked in such a short amount of time and with only an upgrade software kit. â€Å"Well guys, it looks as if you have managed to confuse the hell out of this computer,† I told them, â€Å"You have two different types of file systems on it now.

A Mentor Essay

In life there is always a person, or role model that you will look up to and admire. A person may admire their role model, or mentor, because of their looks, wit, or even general personality. No matter who you are there is always someone that you attempt to emulate in some way, shape, or form throughout your life. There is no limit to the amount of role models one person can have. There may only be one person whose ideas you look at and agree with whole heartedly, or you may take portions from a vast number of others in order to create your own unique persona, and ideas. For myself, a prominent mentor was my high school Chemistry and Physics teacher, Mr. Robert Hage. I admired my Chemistry teacher not for his thinning white hair, or for that matter any of his looks, other than his always cheerful smile. I instead looked up to him as a mentor due to his unique personality, and his vast intelligence. He had a love for cats, liberal ideals, and sweaters with an odd pattern displayed boldly on the front. Mr. Hage had a great sense of humor, and was an avid musician. These were the reasons that I admired Mr. Hage, because these were planes that I took interest in and that I could learn from him in. In the classroom Robert Hage was what some students would call ‘a perfect teacher’ he was not incredibly strict, he didn’t ever hand out detentions, but instead would make a mockery of the any student that unintelligently disrupted his class, but did so in such a sly, humorous manner, that even the victim of the mockery would be laughing uncontrollably. Robert Hage lived an expansive life that led him though a great number of careers including a Musician, Chemist, Physicist, Author, High School teacher, and finally, a mentor. Through this vast professional history he showed a great passion for everything he had done, and in doing so gained a large amount of knowledge, in which he would pass on to his students. This is what I admired most about Mr. Robert Hage; I admired his knowledge and passion of all things he did. I had always enjoyed classes that pertained to a scientific field,  and hoped that Chemistry would come as easily as the other subjects had to me. However, my freshman year the teacher who lectured the Biology class had no interest in the subject she taught and did so half-heartedly; I started to dislike the class. So I was wary about another teacher who just wanted to get through the class more so than teach the students. Needless to say, I was proved wrong, very wrong. The first day of Chemistry class Robert Hage performed a serious of ‘mystifying’ experiments such as lighting Magnesium on fire, which burns with a flame so white it will leave you seeing spots, and placing pure Sodium in a beaker of water, which will combust. Mr. Hage then stated â€Å"For those of you who had doubts coming into this room, Chemistry is fun†. That was all I needed to hear in order to know that this would turn out to be a fortunate turn in events. As the year went on it seemed that my teacher and I had much more in common than I had initially hoped for. I was at an age where I had not yet taken a stance on any real issues but always sat uncomfortably on the fencepost. When I found myself pondering serious life questions, such as religion, he showed me answers through science and that it was perfectly fine not to accept a religion at all as long as you could provide evidence to support your claims. This was a new concept that had never been provided for me, and best of all it wasn’t force fed to me. When I questioned politics he presented the strengths of a liberal standpoint, but all the while letting me know that as long as I could justify my ideas, it was alright to take whatever standpoint I wanted. Although, with every path that was opened, he always told the group in which it was presented to, not to just blindly accept what he said and run with it, but to examine both sides carefully and choose which you thought was the right one. With not only a rekindled interest in science, I was also left with the new interest of rhetoric and debate. With Mr. Hage’s encouragement I joined the high school debate team. When the season came for debate matches to begin; Robert Hage had some more advice for me which was, it is important to know how to argue your side, but more important to know how the opponent will argue theirs, and the best strategy is to beat them with their own words and facts. I will never forget these words, and they are filled with what is in my opinion some of the most valuable wisdom you will hear. Robert Hage played a large role in sculpting my present day personality, and it is because of him that I have developed an everlasting love for music, and am now fluent in playing five different instruments. He is also the reason that I am comfortable with views that may not be shared with a vast majority. Most of all, he is the reason I chose the path in life that I did; he is the reason that I am currently pursuing my majors of the Chemistry and Pre-Medical fields.

Preservation Of The Pine Barrens There is much preservation throughout this country. One that is most famous to New Jersey is the Pine Barrens. I don't believe this bio diverse ecosystem should be developed on. This precious preservation should be saved. In these following paragraphs the author will discuss the animals involved, the plants, major parts, and the dangers facing it today. The Pine Barrens is one of the world's unique nature areas. It is designated as a biosphere reserve by the United Nations, and a last great place by the Nature Conservancy. It covers Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, and Ocean counties. This is definitely a place worth saving. First, in this paragraph the author would like to discuss the animals of the Pine Barrens, and where they live. The habitats of the animals consist of forests, lakes, and the wet lands. The majority of forest is dry and full of pine trees. Most of the animals live in this habitat. The next most populated area is the lake, which can be man made or naturally made. This is where the fish, the chain pickerel, the animals that seek refuge such as the carpenter frog, or the animals that prey on them, the Northern Water Snake live. The wet lands are grassy areas near lakes and tributaries of the lakes like rivers and streams. Many small fish, small water reptiles, paint turtles , snakes, and amphibians live here. There are many endangered animals in New Jersey, and most of them live in the Pinelands. The reason most of them are endangered is because they are losing their natural habitat. Many animals are being reintroduced to our state. For instance the black bear, which was once endangered is now plentiful and populates much of North Jersey. Another animal being reintroduced is the coyote, which is now thriving in the Garden State . The Barred Owl, which is endangered altogether, lives here in small numbers. The pine snake is a vicious terrestrial snake that can also be arboreal. Plants are abundant throughout the Pine Barrens. The pine tree is the most typical, especially the pitcher pine. This is a pygmy pine tree only about ten feet. Other trees consist of pin oaks and cedar. Cedar trees and their roots are what make the water a brownish red color. One of the most popular plants is also their main crop. This plant is the blueberry and cranberry bushes. The Pinelands also have rare plants. The pitcher plant, for one is related to the Venus Fly Trap. This amazing plant traps flies by attracting them with a liquid which is like pollen located at the bottom of the pitcher. The wetlands are an amazing part of the pinelands. They prevent pollution from entering the lakes as well as preventing floods. This is a major part of the safety of the Pine Barrens. This is where the endangered Pine Barrens tree frog lives. On a clear night you can hear these frogs a mile away. They hang out on reeds and trees near the water. This forest is home to many other animals. For instance, there are cranes, water snake, turtles, salamanders, small pickerel and bass, and other frogs like spring peepers. The water snakes are usually mistaken for poisonous water moccasins, which do not live in New Jersey. Wetlands are usually near lake edges, stream edges, or bogs and swamps. There are many dangers facing the Pine Barrens today. The most dangerous is industrialization. Industry pollutes the water land,and air. This greatly impacts the delicate ecosystem of the Pinelands and the animals that live there. This also leads way for more development of housing units. There is already limited forest, we do not need more housing on this precious land. Sure it may look pretty to the buyers, but do they know what's really being done. Only 295,000 acres of 1.1 million are in protection. This ecosystem is too important to waste. Another problem that faces the pinelands is forest fires. There are as many as four hundred forest fires per year. An astonishing twenty four of them are serious, which means they destroy over four hundred acres.
